今天我们来挖一挖英语里与植物有关的词汇，这些词没有看起来那么简单，还藏着很多有趣的引申含义。

01
seed
seed不只是“种子”的意思，在更深层次的含义里，它象征着“起源、萌芽、开端”，就像一颗等待生长发芽的种子，看下它的英文解释：the beginning of a feeling or a development which continues to grow，例如：
This planted the seeds of doubt in my mind.
这件事在我心中播下了怀疑的种子。 
plant the seeds of+情绪/感受，可以表示“是某种情感的根源、引发某种情感”，这个用法很常见，《你当像鸟飞往你的山》中就有这么一句话：
The seed of curiosity had been planted; it needed nothing more than time and boredom to grow.
好奇的种子已经播下，只需时间和厌倦让它成长。
在米歇尔·奥巴马的自传《成为》中，有这么个句子：
As we drove back to the city in the early evening, I felt a new ache, some freshly planted seed of longing.
傍晚，在我们开车回市区的路上，我内心感到一种新的疼痛，那是某个新播下的渴望的种子。
我们以AI为话题，写一个句子：
The rapid advancements in AI technology plant the seeds of a mixture of excitement and fear.
人工智能技术的迅速进步，给社会播下了兴奋与恐惧的种子。

root
roots除了表示“根部”，也能延伸至问题的“根源、起因”或某人的“出身、背景”，看两个例句：
We have to get to the root of the problem.
我们必须找到问题的根源。 
这时 root 相当于 the main cause.
I am proud of my Chinese roots.
我身为炎黄子孙而感到自豪。
root 有很多搭配，比如 put down roots，表示“扎根、定居”，扶霞《鱼翅与花椒》里有这么一段描述：
In the early years of the Qing Dynasty, many of them put down roots in the mountainous areas of Guangdong and Fujian, because others had already claimed the more fertile, low-lying lands.
清朝初期，很多客家人在广东和福建的山区扎了根，因为那些地势比较低也比较肥沃的土地早就被别人占了。
还有 take root，既可表示植物“生根”，也可形容某种思想、观念、政策“深入人心”，英文解释是 to become accepted widely. 《鱼翅与花椒》里有段话描述了中国上世纪五十年代的“大炼钢铁”运动：
Their cooking pots were melted down to feed the furnaces, private cooking was banned, and they were allowed to eat only in commune canteens. Lunatic agricultural policies took root all over the country.
他们把炒锅熔化了投入锅炉，由于禁止私自做菜，只能到公社食堂吃大锅饭。疯狂的农业政策在全国扎了根。
take root 对应的形容词是 deep-rooted，形容习惯、观念、信仰等“根深蒂固的”，看一个《百年孤独》里的例句：
After lunch he felt the drowsiness of inactivity. Because of a kind of scientific superstition he never worked, or read, or bathed, or made love until two hours of digestion had gone by, and it was such a deep-rooted belief that several times he held up military operations so as not to submit the troops to the risks of indigestion.
午饭后，他感到一阵闲下来的空虚。出于一种科学的迷信，他在饭后消化的两小时内不干活、不阅读、不洗澡也不做爱。这种信念如此根深蒂固，早在战时他就曾为了避免士兵们消化不良而多次推迟行动。

stem
stem 作名词指植物的“茎、梗”，作动词常见搭配为 stem from “起源于、根源是”，在写作中用来表示原因，取代because等词。

branch
branch 作名词原本指“树枝”，引申为组织、机构的“分部”，比如银行分行、分公司、分店，都可以用这个词表示，看个例句：
They're planning to open a branch in St. Louis next year.
他们计划明年在圣路易斯开一家分店。
She now works in our Denver branch.
她现在在我们的丹佛分公司工作。
另外 branch 也可以作动词，搭配为 branch out，表示 to start doing something different from the work or activities that you normally do “扩大(兴趣、活动)范围，开辟新的领域”，美剧《疑犯追踪》里出现过这个用法：

bud
bud 本义是“花蕾、叶芽”，形容词 budding 则表示 beginning to develop or become successful “开始发展的、崭露头角的”，我们在《和大家分享几个成语表达》中讲过这个词，复习一个《经济学人》里的句子：
Accelerator programmes, such as Startx or Alchemist Accelerator, court budding entrepreneurs with burritos, desk space and thousands of dollars in earliest-stage funding.
Start或炼金术士(Alchemist Accelerator)等创业加速器以墨西哥卷饼、工位空间和成千上万美元的早期融资来吸引崭露头角的创业家。
2017年考研阅读Text3中也出现过这个词：
Yes, there has been a budding economic recovery since the 2008 global crash, but in key indicators in areas such as health and education, major economies have continued to decline.
的确，自从2008年全球崩盘以来，经济已开始复苏。但就主要经济体而言，医疗健康和教育等方面的关键指标持续下滑。

shoot
shoot 作名词指“幼苗、嫩芽”，幼苗生长得非常快，所以作动词时，shoot up 表示“激增”的意思，看个《经济学人》里的例句：
In February the urban jobless rate shot up to 6.2%, the highest ever. 
2月，城镇失业率跃升至6.2%，创历史新高。

sap
sap可指植物的汁液，可比喻人的精力，而 sap 一转身化为动词，则表示削弱、剥夺一个人的精力、勇气、斗志等等，它有个黄金组合：sap sb of sth，就表示“削弱、使虚弱”，比如表示浑身无力时，就可以说 be sapped of strength/energy.
看个《经济学人》里的例句：
Already, two-thirds of American industries have become more concentrated since the 1990s, sapping the economy’s vitality. 
自从上世纪90年代，美国三分之二的产业已变得更加集中，这抑制了经济活力。
2018年《政府工作报告》英文版中也用到了这个词：
All outdated rules and regulations that sap the inspiration for innovation need to be modified or abolished without delay, and all red tape that strangles efforts to unlock innovation need to be torn clean away.
有悖于激励创新的陈规旧章，要抓紧修改废止；有碍于释放创新活力的繁文缛节，要下决心砍掉。
下次当你感到能量耗尽或斗志萎靡时，就可以用 sap 这个词表示。
