Mica background (雲母摺). 6park.com Image was created in July, 1920 (大正九年七月; July, Taisho 9) and the original blocks and impression were completed in 1921. The original blocks were destroyed in the Great Kantō earthquake in 1923. 6park.com This is a posthumous edition the making of which was sanctioned by Goyo's heirs and published by Tanseisha (丹青社) using the same standards of Goyo's original. Goyo met Tomi, his favorite model, through a colleague from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Goyo was not comfortable with the negotiating required in finding models to pose for artists. He asked his fellow artist, a sculptor, to find him a model with the most beautiful neck and shoulders. The influence of ukiyo-e is clear throughout Goyo’s work, yet you can also see the presence of his Western-style art training in this print. 6park.com The view is from behind as the young beauty with creamy white skin is seated on a pillow holding a small hand towel to her face. Her head is turned slightly and the viewer sees the exposed neck with a few stray hairs- considered a sensual part of a woman’s body. With spare line and soft colors, Goyo has designed a woodblock masterpiece that rates among the best prints of all time.
