6park.com

The UK’s gender investment gap has widened as more young men choose to invest while women hold on to cash due to a lack of confidence, according to a survey. 6park.com

6park.com

Investment research house Boring Money found the gender investment gap rose by £54bn to £567bn between January 2023 and January 2024. Men have £1.01tn invested versus £450bn for women. The figures include personal investments but exclude workplace pensions. 6park.com

6park.com

The difference has grown due to more men between the ages of 25 and 44 putting their money to work for the first time compared with women in the same age bracket, according to the study, which questioned 6,486 adults across the UK. Young women also tend to be more risk-averse and less confident about investing than their male counterparts. 6park.com

6park.com

6park.com

The plaintiff is conflicted. The legal arguments appear tenuous. And, in places, the 35-page lawsuit that Elon Musk filed last week with the Superior Court of California against OpenAI reads like a mash-up between a science fiction film script and a letter from a jilted lover. But Musk’s submission that OpenAI has breached its founding charter and endangers humanity by prioritising profit over safety may still turn into the most substantial move yet to scrutinise the company’s attempts to develop artificial general intelligence.  6park.com

6park.com

Since releasing its ChatGPT chatbot to slack-jawed astonishment in November 2022, OpenAI has emerged as the world’s hottest start-up with more than 100mn weekly users. The FT reported last month that OpenAI had topped $2bn in revenues on an annualised basis and had surged to a private market valuation of more than $80bn. The company has attracted $13bn of investment from Microsoft while other investors, including Singapore’s giant Temasek fund, are clamouring to jump on board. 6park.com

6park.com

Yet OpenAI started out as a far less racy outfit back in 2015. As Musk’s lawsuit spells out, OpenAI was founded as a non-profit research laboratory with a mission to develop AGI — a generalisable form of AI that surpasses human capabilities in most domains — for the public good. Alarmed by the dominance of Google in the field of AI and the possible existential risks of AGI, Musk teamed up with Sam Altman, then president of Y Combinator, to create a different kind of research organisation, “free from financial obligation”. “Our primary fiduciary duty is to humanity,” the company stated. To that end, it promised to share its designs, models and code. 6park.com

6park.com

6park.com

Rich countries’ borrowing is set to hit a record high this year as they are forced to refinance debt at higher rates, the OECD has said, putting a squeeze on many governments’ spending plans. 6park.com

6park.com

Debt issuance across 38 industrialised countries will rise 12 per cent to $15.8tn this year, according a report published on Thursday by the Paris-based organisation. The total overtakes a previous peak reached in 2020 when governments were scrambling to support economies at the height of the coronavirus pandemic.  6park.com

6park.com

The increase in issuance is largely due to a surge in bonds that need to be refinanced. Higher borrowing costs are set to push governments’ interest expenses across member countries up from 2.9 per cent of GDP last year to 3.4 per cent in 2026, according to the OECD’s estimates, adding pressure to public finances. 6park.com

6park.com

6park.com

The Federal Reserve is “not far” from having the confidence to start cutting interest rates, its chair Jay Powell has said, bolstering hopes that the central bank will lower borrowing costs in the coming months. 6park.com

6park.com

Powell told US senators on Thursday that the Federal Open Market Committee was “in the right place” on monetary policy while it waited for proof that almost two years of higher rates had tamed inflation. 6park.com

6park.com

“We’re waiting to become more confident that inflation is moving sustainably to 2 per cent,” the Fed chair said, referring to the central bank’s official inflation target. “And when we do get that confidence, and we’re not far from it, it will be appropriate to dial back the level of restriction so that we don’t drive the economy into recession.” 6park.com

6park.com
