Arise, ye who refuse to be slaves;

With our very flesh and blood Let us build our new Great Wall!

The Peoples of Hong Kong are in the most critical time,

Everybody must roar his defiance.

Arise! Arise! Arise!

Millions of hearts with one mind,

Brave the enemy's gunfire, march on!

Brave the enemy's gunfire, march on!

March on! March on! March on, on!

What a disappointing piece from El-Erian. I guess he is busy but trying to stay "relevant" after being dumped from Pimco.

The stability of China is actually severely in danger from this nonsense in HK which is why it is so dangerous. HK only has a few days to sort this out as China despite their best efforts cannot hide this from their own people and has no intention of allowing this to be a model for social unrest in China.

HK has one of the best social systems in the world. There is an independent judiciary and rule of law. There is free education and virtually free medical care. Maximum tax is 15%. There is super cheap housing for the poor, unbelievable infrastructure (public transport, roads, internet etc) and virtually 100% personal safety. What other country can offer that? And yet these people seem to think there is something they need to protest about. Do they really need the hard times their parents/grandparents went through before they grow up?

China does not feed the Hong Kong people in your sense, all foodstuff even the polluted water supplied to Hong Kong are paid for. Keep the guns to yourself as the Hong Kong protesters believes you do not need violence to fight for your rights. And if you care to study history ask your senior counterparts who were around on June 4, 1989 on how guns were used in Tiananmen Square.

China owns HK.

Free Medical care is becoming free medical care with waiting time of 6 month

Cheap housing with waiting time of 5 years if you are lucky.

Independent judiciary is becoming independent government administrator

Rule of law is becoming Rule by Law.

The biggest threat that China faces is not a demand for democracy from its younger generation - it's the deep corruption and unaccountability of the ruling class. When the full bill for the looting of Chinese enterprises needs to be paid, it will take a heavy hit on Chinese growth. An earlier move toward democracy would have improved the transparency and accountability of the government, but I fear that they've passed the point where that would make a difference.

Huge amount of mainlanders rush to H.K. to get government welfare and wait for government housing while staying in sub divided units

It would be nice to see the Chinese leadership be more creative. Maybe too the protesters might try an old Beatles' song, 'Move over once; move over twice! Come on, baby, don't be so precise!'

"The world cannot afford a politically induced slowdown in China."

What stuff Beijing Species "make" or "produce" that "your" world cannot afford?

If labor cost getting more expensive, consumers have to pay more, then their employers have to pay consumers more, then "cost of living" increases more. So?

One of the "major" economic issues challenged Americans' wages was "cheap" labor cost.

Folks shopped at Walmart(TM), employers recognized that, therefore they didn't have to give raises while taking current laws' advantages to bring jobs to Beijing earning more money by reducing operating costs but selling the products for the "same" prices or even "more" expensive.

A pair of Nike(TM) shoes didn't sell any cheaper for decades, it didn't matter where they were made. The profit margin helped Nike Corp.'s earning multiples expanded or selling more volumes to justify stock price, in this case, it's the "magic" trick for what's so-called "operating" cost, isn't it? Nike will "buy" from sub-contract manufacturers (S. Korea, China, Taiwan, etc.) at lower cost, it doesn't worry about where the products coming from, not China, not Vietnam, not S. Korea, not Indonesia.

To warrant profit margin, Nike(TM) taking advantages of current tax incentives to keep cash abroad earning interest payments while NOT paying taxes on those cash or investment assets.

At the end of the day, Nike(TM) cannot sell shoes to majority of US consumers because "the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer" and the vicious cycle continues... and we sitting at home reading/writing awful stuff out there... LOL

My mother taught me years ago, "protect the tree that bears you fruits, don't worry about the forest," don't BET against American workers' productivity. We have the "best" quantifiable productivity comparing to ALL earthlings! LOL

Just leave HK alone as she is.

In fact, all Malaysian or American or British or Japanese can visit HK without a visa but not the mainland Chinese.

So mainland visitors need visa to visit HK. So? It is for historical reason.

The key is, if mainland authority wants to abolish the visa requirement, it can do so by simply snapping a finger.

That's opinion and pure speculation.

The reality for wumao here is: Please join the queue, fill up the form and wait for your visa if you want to visit HK.

So why are you Astro Turfing so much? :-)

Enjoy your polluted skies. And rivers. And keep smoking those cigarettes - your own government wants you to go young. The PRC learned nothing from EU and US and Canada. We've all realized that pollution cannot go on - but you're bringing another 360 coal plants online in 2014 alone!

Most HK people don't think HK economically significant to china, I don't know where you get that sense of feeling from. But HK people do think they are more of a global citizen than the Chinese as they are more educated and civilised. Hk people generally don't push in, they don't shout, they don't let their children run off, they don't litter or spit when they are in another country. Of course as a Chinese, you are going to attack me and tell me that not all Chinese are like that. Therefore, i wrote 'generally' meaning in usual cases, but my assumption is not absolute.

Hey Fartolio Fatso, there is an actual term for those people you are describing, they are called the 50 Cent Party, you can wiki it :) Basically, like you have said, they write pro bejing or anti-west comments on many different websites in attempt to improve people's sentiment towards the leadership of CCP. Surely, they are getting paid for doing so. But I am also sure that those who can write in English will get paid much more than 50 cents. ha!

You people breaking your backs to produce stuff for the "whole" world to enjoy.

Raw materials ---> Labor ---> Products (exports) + Wastes (stayed on China's soil)

Your products are cheap for a reason, "lousy" quality via unethical work productivity + poor basic designs (if you don't agree on this, I have thousands of real facts to tell you about your products' designed flaws in details.. I have 2 serious documented ones on my desk right now as I've typed these words.. (1) involved the "plastic" tubing inserting into gas tank broken up into pieces, inside gas tank, after 2 years, because of the tube's basic materials is the reason why it shouldn't be inserted in liquid gas/oil storage tank, and (2) involved the "rusted" steel bolts inside cement because your engineers "assumed" that cement enclosed air/oxygen exposure to these bolts therefore there's no need to worry about oxidative reaction. To our engineering standard, a bridge or a highway/street, etc. should have lifespan longer than 100 years, most of them, ~150 years. A Navy Aircraft Carrier should last more than 50 years. The problem with us is, for some reasons, your lousy quality products are "creeping" into our infrastructures costing us billions of dollars!

Your wastes are NOT manageable because they're HUGE. It took the US couple decades to clean up our wastes (smog, acid rains, etc.) and we were 200 Mil population and didn't "depend" on exports to exchange for food, raw materials.

You want to play the Superpower game? Learn the rules. LOL
